My name is Enara Tompkins and I’m currently a student at Deakin University in Primary Education.
The moment I was inspired to become a primary school teacher was when I was in my year twelve health class, we were learning about aspects of global health and development and how not everyone has the equal access to education. I knew not everyone had access to education but what I didn’t know is that if a child has basic literacy and numeracy skills, then they have the tools to escape extreme poverty.
Whenever I thought about future careers in high school, I had thought about the possibility of going into primary teaching. However I was leaning towards doing a Bachelor of Arts at university because I was so unsure about my future and just wanted to continue studying the things I love.
One day I had finally made the connection that if I can bring my love of learning to a classroom then maybe I can inspire a love of learning in the students I teach. If teachers give students a love of learning then they will be less likely to drop out of school and get a job, wherever they are in the world. I want to help kids reach their potential all over the world because teachers have the power to change the world.
